Work in the profession of work health and safety; one of the most rapidly growing industries due to new legislation. This qualification enables you access to one of the most in demand professions ensuring the wellness and safety of employees.

Students will gain a broad range of skills involved with WHS including hazard identification, risk assessment and risk control. Students will also learn to assist with compliance and relevant laws in line with the introduction of new WHS legislation. This course will also focus on claims management, rehabilitation and return-to-work programs as well as implementing and maintaining WHS management systems.

Note: This qualification supersedes and is equivalent to BSB41407 Certificate IV in Occupational Health and Safety.



This course is appropriate for learners wishing to develop a career in the field of occupational health and safety or to pursue higher studies. It deals with applying solutions to a defined range of unpredictable problems plus analysing and evaluating information from a variety of sources. The course also provides the opportunity to move into the role of a WHS Officer in a full-time dedicated position who works under the supervision of a WHS Coordinator or WHS Manager.

Based on the employment outcomes and training package requirements, the following units of competency have been selected for this qualification. Five core units and five elective units must be successfully completed to attain the certificate.


Core Units

Assist with compliance with WHS laws (BSBWHS402) 

Contribute to implementing and maintaining WHS consultation and participation processes (BSBWHS403) 

Contribute to WHS hazard identification, risk assessment and risk control (BSBWHS404) 

Contribute to implementing and maintaining WHS management systems (BSBWHS405) 

Assist with responding to incidents (BSBWHS406) 


Elective Units

Assist with claims management, rehabilitation and return-to-work programs (BSBWHS407) 

Assist with effective WHS management of contractors (BSBWHS408) 

Assist with workplace monitoring processes (BSBWHS409) 

Contribute to work-related health and safety measures and initiatives (BSBWHS410) 

Ensure workplace emergency prevention procedures, systems and processes are implemented (PUAWER002B) 



This qualification is delivered completely online. The learners will be part of an online learning community as well as their own learning groups connected through an easy to use online learning platform.  This platform provides you with the convenience and flexibility of studying at home at your own pace and schedule while also being able to easily attend face-to-face tutorials with industry experts.

The learner facilitator interaction will mainly be online and email communication. The learners will have an opportunity to listen to and see the facilitator through the scheduled online tutorials.



The course is designed to reflect a real-life workplace context through online learning activities, face-to-face online tutorials with industry experts, workplace focused projects and practical tasks and assessments.

It is assumed that a considerable number of the learners enrolling in this course have either had some work experience or are considering starting out in a new job within the industry.
